As I was crawling out of bed a couple of mornings ago I was surprised that a bird flew right up and landed on the windowsill outside. It looked to be the very largest, fattest blue jay I have ever seen. It looked in at me and tapped three times on the window with its beak. It sat looking puzzled for a few more seconds and flew away.
I was awestruck. What a beautiful sight it was. I was able to see that lovely bird up close for those few seconds. I sat on the edge of my bed absorbing the wonder of it all.
Then I began to wonder. All my life I had been hearing superstitions about birds. And I have had more than my share of experiences with birds.
When I was in high school some friends and I were skipping school. As we came out of a building downtown I looked up to see what the weather was like. I was bird-bombed right between the eyes!
While out driving the other day I saw the biggest flock of birds I have ever seen. There were hundreds, maybe more than a thousand of them.
One time my son was waiting for me to come out from my job to give me a ride home. The birds bombed his truck so bad I was not sure I was going to be able to get in without being covered in excrement. These are just examples.
But back to superstitions. The first one I thought of was that if a bird comes into the house there will be a death soon. Lucille Ball firmly believed this to the point that she refused to stay in a hotel that had pictures of birds or wallpaper with birds.
Some people believe that this only applies to black colored birds. Some people believe it is good luck if a wren enters the house or nests in the eaves.
Some say that a bird flying in the house means that there is a change coming. It could be death, a change of homes, or some other change.
Birds flying into windows (house or car) are also supposed to bring news of death. Birds looking in the windows or tapping at windows can mean a death is coming. It can also mean that the bird is simply seeing its reflection in the window and interacting with the bird it sees.
I am happy to report that there have been no deaths so I believe perhaps that bird was flirting with his reflection. And I have a new great-granddaughter so there was a change in the family.
There are more superstitions about birds. Because there are so many and sometimes different birds mean different things, I am simply going to make a list.
Seeing an owl during the day means someone will die.
If a bird deposits droppings on you, it brings good luck.
A bird calling from the north means a tragedy is on the way, from the west brings good luck, from the south means the harvest will be plentiful, and from the east that you will find true love

An albatross flying around a sailing ship means bad weather and high winds are on the way.
The albatross is believed to contain the soul of a sailor. Therefore it is unlucky to kill one. However the feet of dead albatrosses are used as tobacco pouches.
Magpies are supposed to be the devil in disguise. If a magpie is hanging around your house the devil is trying to cause trouble for you. If you carry an onion it will keep him away. You can also tip your hat and cross your fingers or spit three times over your shoulder and say "devil, devil, I defy thee."
In Scotland they believe the magpie hides a drop of Satan's blood under its tongue.
Legend says that magpies were the only birds that refused to give Jesus solace on the cross by singing for him. Then they refused to wear full mourning for them because of their black and white feathers.
In Korea magpies bring good luck and can foretell the future.

If you would like to share some of the things you have heard about birds, we would like to hear them.
Wow, I never realized there were so many and that to me shows that none of these should be taken as fact. I like the marrying a sailor one :) I have an owl that I adopted at the zoo and visit him at least two to three times a week and see him only during the day. These are all very interesting, though.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I gave my nephew a whale for Christmas. He was able to follow it and see what it was doing in its ocean home. He loved it.
DeleteThere were actually a lot more superstitions that I found but they seemed like they were just too similar to others so I left them out. That means that there must be more.
Holy cow, lots of omens. As an avid birder it could be dangerous to some. Just posted a bird post
DeleteI agree. It makes me wonder every time I see a bird now. I am on my way to see your post.
DeleteI had an encounter w a bird flying in and out of my house and a brother of a dear friend died that day. 3 weeks later a bird flew in and out of my house and a son like friend died in less than a week from that day. I am freaked by birds now
DeleteLast month 2 birds flew in.. The following week I received 6 calls of the death of someone I know. I stopped answering the phone after the 4th call
DeleteA Bird was in My room in the light shade Mt husband and i dontknow how tve bird got hostales in oye room this is the second time ir eles all in the room into the bathroom ir acted like it didnt wanna leave dir soñé reason. Ir was a magpie i looked the picture up this is the second time This happen the first time was downstairs in the kitchen
DeleteUnfortunately, I have a freaky story. Suddenly a bird started knocking on our window every morning. I told my hubby that in my culture the superstition means someone will die. He laughed at me, of course. Guess, what -- a week or two later I got a frantic phone call from my mother and she said that my childhood friend 29 year old female (back home, another country) died from ovarian cancer. I was kind of freaked out. To add to this story, I was sitting at my work yesterday and everyone from the office already left, if was after 5, and as soon as last person departed from the office, a huge bird started tapping on a window... and then another huge bird joined "the knocking party"... not cool... ugh!
DeleteI too did not know there are so many superstitions about birds, the one I could not forget is the good luck that comes from the bird droppings, but how can that be good luck?
ReplyDeleteI know that I did not feel lucky when I was hit between the eyes!
Delete3 times now I have had swallow trapped in my home... please tell me what this means xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
ReplyDeleteHi this might not be relevant to you anymore but, in my tribe (as cliche as it is, I am native american) certain birds flying in your home means a relative is lying to you, or is telling an important lie I'm not sure which bird, but one certain one is a sign of thunder and means that relative is in danger if they keep lying.
Delete3 swallows have been trapped in my home now, can you tell me what this means please x
ReplyDeleteIt means u have a hole somewhere
DeleteFor three days straight, around 2-3 pm a blue jay comes to my window and taps on it repeatedly. It taps as if it were a wood pecker then proceeds to stare at me. It only flies away when I get up. I know that because today I wanted to see if would fly away on its own eventually. I waited for around 5 minutes until I decided to get closer. When I got up, it flew away. Any ideas why?
ReplyDeleteit thought u were danger, that's what wild birds & any wild animal usually does
DeleteHey anonymous i wanted to ask u i had a bird in my car and it looked like a sparrow it was brown and chuncky with like dots of white small and it was just sitting there so peaceful looking at me what does this mean
DeleteI had a hummingbird come to my window about 10 o'clock in the morning flutter is wings and then flew away anybody knows what that means
ReplyDeleteIf you have hummingbird feeders out, (4 cups of water to 1 cup of sugar boiled together and stirred well) then the feeders need changing, and it is trying to tell you this. I've been feeding them for decades, and they let me know. If the water is cloudy or looks like it I getting mold, it would make them sick. Homemade is better than the commercial mix,
DeleteI think its true that if a bird fly's into your house a death is soon to come. I witnessed this when i was eight years old my aunt passed away shortly a few weeks thereafter. I remember my grandmother always said it was Bad luck if a bird fly's in your house. I forgot to mention my aunt was over the house when the crow flew into the house very Erie!!!! I still get goosebumps about this incident.
ReplyDeleteI have had two birds fly into my house. It's been 8 years. I'm still alive and kicking. :-)
DeleteI witnessed a black bird I think it was a crow flew into my house one day when my aunt was over babysitting me. The weeks there after she passed away suddenly. My grandmother had said it before that if a bird fly's I to your house there will be news of a death soon. How creepy about that!!! I never forgot about that day.
ReplyDeleteA hummingbird flew up to my window as I was sitting there one morning. We were face to face, it stayed for 10 seconds or so and then just flew away. Don't know what it means but I had a feeling my mom who passed a few years back was saying hello to me.
ReplyDeleteA hummingbird came into our garage and even with the door open he would not leave. I am not sure if the bird left or he died and one of my dogs grabbed the body. My wife said that she saw one of the dogs with what appear to be a bird on his mouth.
ReplyDeleteNext day I was given the news that my brother was found dead in New Jersey. It must be noted that the hummingbird was a dark green that is not as common for hummingbirds. My brother died sitting in a bench in front of a place where there are trees that might nest hummingbirds. My house is in Californina 3,500 miles away.
My mom heard a bird whistling so loud, she actually thought it was a person whistling outside by the window. Don't know what this means
ReplyDeleteAre there any superstitions for a bird flying right into you? A small bird flew into my leg today. Some months ago, around 11 pm, an owl was in the middle of the road and wouldn't move for my car. I went around it and then circled back because I thought he might have been fake. He still didn't move until I was about five feet away and honked the horn. He didn't look injured and he flew away without problems. I was afraid that the next person wouldn't see him and hit him.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand superstitious people, looking to find some significance in common everyday things. Because this page refers to birds, I have to say that these omens or superstitions about birds, while interesting, are just an irrational fear of the unknown. I've been around birds all my life, I've studied about them and raised various species. No one I knew died when I've seen, photographed or been near owls during the day. Birds have never caused me unhappiness or brought bad news, etc.
ReplyDeleteMost of these superstitions are laughable and I feel sad for humanity that there are such ignorant people out there that believe in such craziness. Read, do some research about the subject of your fears so you'll have a better understanding of the world around you. Correlation does not imply causation. Someone dies because a bird flew in the house 3 weeks prior? Really? The bird was the cause? Come on people.
no, the bird is not the 'cause', they are merely 'signs' that can allow some of us, if we pay attention and take notice, to see them! it really is amazing when you are open minded to be able to experience it ... for many generations a family i knew well would make note on a calendar of such things and 'always' without hesitation, 3 days, 3 weeks or 3 months the news would come of someones passing, to the day! nothing to be afraid of whatsoever, just a knowing, a reminder perhaps to cherish what you have, with whom you have it :)
DeleteI have a home office and my desk faces the windows looking out into the yard with trees and shrubbery. There is a bird that has repeatedly tapped against the windows for weeks now. So far, I have not died, had good luck, bad luck, or anything else. Superstitions are interesting to me and fun to read, however, a bit out there in my opinion. I found this blog because I was wondering if there was something I could do to prevent this bird from potentially breaking his neck in his relentless pursuit of tapping on my window.
ReplyDelete"And I have a new great-granddaughter so there was a change in the family." We had a dove fly into our house today and I'm newly pregnant, maybe you're onto something :P
ReplyDeleteI am taking a meditation course & determined that my Native American spirit guide is the sparrow; the teacher said it makes itself known to you, you can't pick it, it picks you. Since then a sparrow had tapped on my bedroom window twice and car window once
ReplyDeleteBirds, butterflies, are the only ones I know from experience in which the spirits of love ones use to visit their living love ones. I did not have any knowledge about birds flying or tapping being prelude to death.
ReplyDeleteso Im not embarassed to say that Im a lil freaked out right now!!! not 45 min ago, I heard a noise outside my bedroom window, sitting here drinking coffee after seeing my fiance off to work... I didnt think TOO much of it until it got VERY loud, like I guess KNOCKING, not TAPPING... so I thought a PERSON was KNOCKING... I pulled curtain back and to my unwelcome and EERIE AS HELL surprise, IT WAS A HUGE BLACKBIRD!! out of sheer startled instinct I Knocked back!! lol.... Actually now that I think about it, I think I scared the hell out of HIM too!! lol... He DID jump back... so like that one person said, thinking he was mistaken and thought hed found a mate or new buddy in his reflecxtion. THAT or he was trying to get warm seeing as how its 19 degrees out there right now, and he could rest on the air conditioning unit hanging out the window. Little *%^&! Talk about an adrenaline rush. Cross ur fingers and pray for me guys!! I guess whats gonna happen will happen no matter what... so Im not gonna worry myself to death about it. Good luck out there! Remember also that ignorance is blissful lack of stress. If I was going to die in 2 weeks after some superstitious occurence, I would prefer not to spend it in panic mode. God bless good people.
ReplyDeleteToday while on lunch break,a small bird flew into my right side of chest. My head was down while it happened. I thought someone threw something at me. It scared the crap out of me. I'm kind of freaked out about it,because I think it could be a bad sign.
ReplyDeleteI find superstitions to be interesting. I take care of an elderly couple and I put up a feeder outside their living room window so she can watch the birds during the day. Regular feeder in winter. Hummingbird feeder in the summer. The feeder was empty this morning and since I had no bird seed at work they were going to need to wait. Ended up with a bluebird crashing into the window, pecking at a t, landing on the ledge and hanging on the screen. Followed me outside and sang to me while l was out in the deck. I recently had a very close friend pass and have been praying for a sign he is ok. Makes you wonder doesn't it? We've never even seen a bluebird here let alone had one try to get in for hours and hours
ReplyDeleteLast night, while I was driving, a white bird flew towards me and came so close but didnt hit the windscreen. I was going 110km/perhr.
ReplyDeleteWell I have to say I'm pretty sure a sparrow has been taunting my house for a while know. It wakes me up in the mornings tapping on my french doors, I love to open my doors and let the fresh air in. Recently one flew into my house I was not home my best friend was here and my baby girl Lillee (boston terrier), he said she looked at him and then the bird then back at him... He just told her IDk. Then it flew out, 2 weeks later she passed away and I am devastated, can't explain why I just can't get past this. Now my father and my daughters father is not doing well. I am really hoping that the good man upstairs has his plan maybe they need a guide and she is it. Unfortunately for me I see her everyday, everywhere and it is killing me, I'm going through that empty house sen-drum all over again. I was thinking if I keep the doors open again and trusting in the statement above that they come take their souls and maybe thats it. I pray for her and miss her, is it possible the sparrow came for her? PLEASE help me understand......
ReplyDeleteHad a dove outside my window this morning making dove noises hopefully just admiring his/her reflection...
ReplyDeleteThe story of birds pecking into glass means someone is going to die was told to me by my father when I was young but I really wittness this when my mom was dying every light fixture window on my house had birds pecking constantly at them and even my children where at school and the birds were pecking there classroom windows and I rushed to the hospital to see my mom and she died that d
ReplyDeleteay.
Did all the other kids in their class have a death too? Don't believe that cause if it happens again where birds are on your windows your going to automatically think of someone dying and sometimes when we believe something it will happen so don't do that to yourself. I was poor as a kid I grew up here in E. Hollywood however 2 blocks up are million dollar + homes and because I was poor the rich kids would laugh at me cause I was white like them but I was poor and my clothes sucked. They used to laugh and tell me I was ugly and this was all the time I would cry but never told anyone cause I thought they were just going to say it was because I was ugly because they said it so much I believed it. In high school hey were still there yes I went to school with these people for 12 years but anyway in high school guys started being nice to me and I mean good looking ones and then I met a girl named Natalie "still my best friend" well she told me I was real pretty and this girl was the most beautiful I'd ever seen so I thought she was setting me up and it just broke me and for some reason when we were getting dressed for P.E she looked over and asked me if I was okay because I didn't want to be around her cause I swore she something was up her sleeve and I really admired her she was everything I wasn't she was popular and extremely beautiful she was only 15 and modeling for Vidal Sassoon that was a huge deal back then (I'm 44) Well I was just so tired of feeling unwanted and ugly to the point I wanted to kill myself "really do it". Well I had a full blown panic attack right then and there I had t go to the nurses office and they made me lay down. When school was over an hour later when I walked out of her office Natalie was there waiting for me with some of her friends who were all really nice to me (no one was ever nice to me in school from that area) much less than the prettiest girl and all her other very popular friends who were also very beautiful. They told me if anyone ever said anything or did anything to let them know when they asked who it was I didn't want to say because they were friends with Kelly the main one. So the next day at lunch Natalie brought me exactly what she had she doubled her lunch I didn't know how to register any of these acts of kindness cause thats what they were well during lunch Kelly (the leader of my torturers) walked over to me and looked disheveled and just sat next to me and said I'm really sorry then looked over at Natalie and said are we good now (she didn't mean sorry that witch) and Natalie was very aware of her sarcasm and said no were not and your uninvited to my house this weekend she could not believe what she heard and said whatever and walked away. That weekend I went to her house and met her parents and brother now there I saw where her good came from . :)
DeleteWhen you see a flock of blackbirds flying rather than flying individually, it means that it's going to snow.
ReplyDeleteMy family is from the Appalacias and are very superstitious. I've always heard that a bird hitting a window means you will hear of 3 deaths within the year. Yesterday I heard of the passing of a dear sweet lady I've known for 6 years. Today a bird hit my window. Not one of them can tell me if there'll be 3 more or if she was part of the 3.
ReplyDeleteThere's a bird that came to my window at work and goes back and forth between the litte tree and my window. It leaves then comes back. It is desperately trying to get in the window. What does it mean
ReplyDeleteLast night we had a storm with heavy rain and strong winds me and July daughter was sitting in my bedroom and a baby bird hooded its claws into the screen and started to flap its wings the bird did this for a seconds and then sat at my windowsill looking at us when I walked pass his little head follow me then looked back at my daughter then looked the other way the it flew off the right I don't know what this means I am very very worried but not at all afraid some please help me
ReplyDeleteHow do I change the bad omen of a bird flying into my house.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm late to the discussion. Recently a family of Seagulls has nested near our pool. At first the parents would come in the pool with me. They would keep to one side of the pool. Now the young seagull comes in the pool. He/she will swim right up to me or fly right to me. When I back up he/she just swims closer. And if I swim away he/she follow along. The mamma is close by and seem to just ignore the whole thing. Anyone know what this means?
ReplyDeleteI was married to a Cherokee indian man and he told me that his grandmother told him that if you hear an owl hooting at night, tie a knot in your bedsheets to ward off any deaths, or else someone close to you will die soon.
ReplyDeleteA chicken my brother once caught but soon lingered away just came flying in the window and we're on the second floor :)
ReplyDeleteHi, last night I went for a walk near an old chapel, it was quite dark so wasnt sure if I saw a dove or a pigeon but he was just sat on the arm of a bench all alone. He seemed quite peaceful, not in pain and when I went closer to him, he didnt show any signs of flying away. I was only about 6ft away and we looked at each other for a few minutes and I made a small noise and he was moving his head with interest. I think we shared a connection – it felt like it. After a few minutes I walked away and left the bird sat still on the bench. The area by the chapel is very peaceful and was used to be run by monks in around the 13th C. In the last year I have got significantly more spiritual and wondering would anyone have any idea what the significance of this was or could be? It certainly felt positive and it was only by chance that I felt the need to go for a spontaneous walk (so wondering if that was meant to happen?)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks in advance to you all
Phil
what does it mean when a blue jay flies into ur house and poops. i was always told a death was coming but wanted to see what else it could be
ReplyDeleteIt means the Blue Jay had to poop because, well ... Blue Jays poop.
Delete"A change" okay well I change my underwear clothes and many other things everyday all day so when someone dies I'll blame it to something I do everyday. It's like predicting somebody walking into a paint store is going to buy paint. I mean it makes no sense and if people actually still believe this stuff today I would question their Mental Health ... and IQ. These frivolous ritualistic acts were brought to us very long ago by people who were not the smartest tools in the shed after all they did things like use people with deformities and special needs for entertainment and abused them or put them away in this institutions to die alone or sold them into slavery. It was okay and normal to everybody when they would do that kind of stuff so like I said I really wouldn't take any of there ideologies / theories with much thought. ALSO these people were pagans from long ago, people who practice Voodoo from Haiti, and last but not least people who practice in the dark arts AKA witchcraft "Witches & Warlocks". I was born here in East Hollywood (Los Feliz) California we see owls during the day all the time I've been seen them since I could remember I was raised four houses down from where I live right now and according to this silly stuff everyone around me should be dead including all my neighbors but, no they're all alive. Well actually my aunt died last year so should I blame the owl I saw around the time she died? That would be ridiculous because what about all the other times I've seen owls, where are all the dead people from that? It makes no sense to blame something you do everyday which is called "change". Look if these things were true they'd be in the Bible and well they're not. These things are not positive or healthy to anybody and most of all are not from a good place. Do you know that sometimes if we believe in something it will happen yes, just by us believing them ..."They will be". Our minds and energies are fed by the data we give them. So why feed your mind this negative data all that's going to do is put you in that negative place and when you see these things or hear these things you're automatically going to think bad things and then bad things will come to you. There was a book somebody wrote called "The Secret" explains it pretty well I however already knew about it but when I saw the book I thought you know what this would be perfect to explain to somebody who doesn't understand how it all works this book explained it very well even though the writer and people involved scandal after during some smoke out Pow Wow thing but I'm not talking about that. Something big has on their own but the book was pretty much right on the money when they explained how our energy and our mind all work with everything around us "And what they said really does work ever since I read a certain part of that book made myself a sort of law that I now live by and it has done me very good check it out you I have a feeling you might like it I've seen them at thrift shops lately you can get them really cheap anywhere try Goodwill you can get one for about 1 dollars for about $1 not bad considering it's a book that might actually change a part of your life and the way you think to better everything around you it was a big Spectrum out there and you don't want to be on the dark part of it like the people who believe these things that you wrote about.
ReplyDeleteOver the past week I've had a sparrow land on my fire escape with a beak full of worms. It stays for a few minutes with its back to the window then flies away. The last time the bird did it twice in one day. I figure it has a nest nearby. But I wonder if it is a message for me. What would it be?
ReplyDelete
